Government House WA
Being able to work on this project was an absolute honor, the history of Government house and how much it meant to my client turned this from a job into a labour of love. I received this Client and Brief after extensive conversations with Susie Annus, who lived and hosted events within government house for many years and oversaw its renewal and design. After hearing and seeing how much this building had part in so many moments that shaped our state and nation, we decided to go with a classic and historical design style while drawing inspiration from Vogue and other fashion magazines to keep it fresh and contemporary. This Vogue-esque inspiration showed mostly in Asymmetry and large drop caps.
Design Process - Letter from the Governor
1/4
This first quick iteration was made with inspiration for the layout drawn from the image of Governor Kim Beazley, with the belief that this letter was to be a two-page spread. It turns out it was a miscommunication between the client and I, as she preferred the text on one page and an image on the other.
2/4
The second refinement of this letter was my personal favourite. Due to the amount of text, I felt that the columns made it much more digestible and harder to lose your place. I also re-incorporated the drop cap in a different way so that it could still be tied in with the designs on other pages.
3/4
Unfortunately for me, the client wasn't a fan of the columns, and much preferred the text loose. The sole purpose of this revision was to show my client the difference in layout and discuss improvements.
4/4
This final version went to publish, with more emphasis placed on the signature and sign off, and my need for alignment met by implementing a column of negative space on the right hand side.
