Make Money (no more whimsy for you) | DEC 2024

Facets | DEC 2024
HUMAN STUDIES - SERIES
1 - Make Money (no more whimsy for you). I love any chance to play with colour, and when I saw this reference image on Pinterest (an old film image of a crying kid in their Sunday best) I knew I HAD to make a drawing from it. The text and isolated head came from delirium after forcing myself to complete the drawing that afternoon, and talking to my very busy friend (who now works in finance) that I used to paint murals and sculpt alongside.
2 - Facets. This sketch was more of a refresher to keep my skills up in depicting faces, with the series of images spanning over a few weeks, whenever I had a bit of time.

1 - Long Fish | OCT 2024

2 - Man, I Love Frogs | OCT 2024

3 - Blue Birds | OCT 2024

4 - Pennipeds (And More!) | NOV 2024
ANIMALS - SERIES
1 - Long Fish! This was originally an illustration of about 7 different species, but this Gar fish is the only one I really liked. As soon as I realised I could link them together I was OBSESSED.
2 - Frogs! I solely picked the weirdest named frogs I could find in WA. The names were the entire inspiration.
3 - Blue Birds! I couldn't stop thinking about this bird my friend showed me called the 'Blue Footed Booby', if you need a pick me up just look at videos of them walking. It's incredible and so, so cute
4 - Pennipeds (and more)! These illustrations came from me wondering what the original names of seals were to first nation people. did you know "fur seals" were originally named Maamoongat Twert which just means Water Dog?? I feel like they had it right first time round.

Protector from the storm - 2024 | procreate
I was relaxing at Wharton's beach while camping in Esperance, watching the storm roll in, when this couple ran down the hill with their dog in tow. They jumped into the water (even though it was freezing) and their dog stood watching, waiting for them to come back.
With this artwork I focused less on the colour or composition and more just tried to depict a feeling of waiting. Waiting for both the storm, and for the dogs home to return to shore.

Bunnings - 2024 | procreate
The purpose of this illustration was to play with opposing undertones, with the subject having red undertones, but still a variation of hues.
I contrasted this with a low tonal range in the background with a strong yellow undertone. trying to keep as much detail and plastic reflections as possible while sticking to the block-y style that I'm exploring.
The red shirt has far more detail, I was playing with blending modes on different textures and found that the reference image with the red as a hard mix created this harsh juxtaposition with its gritty textures.

The Road to Katanning - 2024 | procreate & adobe photoshop
I created this illustration on the 9-hour drive from Esperance to Perth. We aimed to have as little stops as possible along the way, but made sure to include a stop in Katanning to visit the adult-sized playground. I snapped a few reference images on the way there, created a collage of reference images and got to work on procreate!
The style of this illustration is largely due to me studying the work of Artist Chris Firger, who creates these vibrant artworks with bright undercoats.
